Firewalls

Surfing the web these days is like safely navigating a minefield.  It seems that everywhere you go, there are dangers that lurk to steal your data or infect your computer.  There are some preventative measures that can be taken to deter these "bad-guys."

Hardware Firewalls

One method is to install a hardware firewall.  A hardware firewall is a very inexpensive device that can easily be installed on your network.  The hardware firewalls are also known as "routers."  I have a laptop and do not like to be chained to my desk, so I chose a wireless router for my personal configuration.  A hardware firewall/router is not a foolproof solution, but it will help to deter some of the bad-guys.  Keep in mind that some of these routers come with a basic configuration.  Meaning that they have only simple security enabled.

Some common consumer/small business brands are:

  1. Lynksis
  2. Netgear
  3. Buffalo

Software Firewalls

Another method is a software firewall.  Similar to a hardware firewall, the software firewall inspects individual data packets and allows as a gatekeeper for your personal computer. The nice thing about the software firewall is that it goes with you.  If you have a laptop, it is essential that you understand your software firewall so that you do not get hacked at your local coffee shop.  Windows, Mac OSX and Linux all include built-in software firewalls.
